About My Work

The focus of my interest is not the reproduction of organic structures but the reflection on the character of nature and the nature of human beings as part of this nature. I am fascinated by the vital uncontrollability that manifests itself not only in what happens to us from the outside world – the fortune or misfortune of life - but first of all within ourselves, our emotions, desires and appetites. My sculptures express this understanding of the human nature as an uncontrollable, beautiful and ugly, often uncanny and yet vulnerable part of each person – the stranger within.

I like to shape material to give it a new form, I  like to try out different materials and textures - so I used a variety of them: poly-urethan, plaster,  bronze, papermaché, wachs, paper and clay.  Due to its natural vital qualities clay proved to be an inspiring material for my work. While some works appear as creatures or growths of a possible alternative evolution, other pieces are clearly reminiscent of masks, focusing on our hidden potentials or natures or reflecting on the duality of vulnerability and aggression.

During the past years I was working on translating some of the aspects of the ceramic objects into paper, creating paper cut objects now celebrating the more ephemeral, light and playful aspects of life, connecting to my experiences in Japan and China.

Besides my 3-D objects and installations, drawing is an important part of my practice and a major focus in my teaching.
